It was a deliberate deception

The heated debate about the plagiarism of the thesis by Federal Minister for Guttenberg heated the minds of the time in Germany.

Ladies & Gentlemen,

Suppose I would write an article from a newspaper that literally, and then publish under my name. Suppose, further, I'd googled together not only one article, but almost all posts and comments from the Internet and then underneath write here at this place the name "Peter Bröll" as an author: I would be guilty of plagiarism. And of course I would be ashamed to the bone, if I - would operate plagiarism - instead offering their own ideas.

The German defense minister to Guttenberg has been shown that he has written many pages of his thesis, literally. Sometimes he even copied the text, including the misspelling of other authors and then added together, these text blocks in a modular system for a dissertation. In this way he concocted his time-saving "scientific" thesis, knowing that he is an unprecedented brazen plagiarism was guilty. For carelessness or accident, it may not have been. According to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung of 22 February is the Minister now to fewer than 270 of 393 pages have copied from other authors. That even the introduction to his thesis does not come from his pen is not hard to believe. But it's true. This is the part of Mr. Guttenberg is a foolhardy approach that speaks of science scorn.

In any case, it is important to ensure that intellectual property thieves have an easy time - and in particular in the interest of those who take academic work seriously.

zu Guttenberg yesterday pulled the emergency brake. His ill-gotten doctorates he now wants to "rest" not just leave - as he had announced the day before - but put permanently. He wants to clear the threat of withdrawal of his doctorate previously come from the University of Bayreuth. Guttenberg said yesterday at a CDU meeting in Kelkheim im Taunus, he was "on the nonsense that I wrote."

In truth it was more than just nonsense. It was intellectual property theft. On the part of Chancellor Merkel and the CDU, which has accepted the Google-Copy-paste affair largely uncritical means there is a massive betrayal of one's own ideals. The high held by the CDU virtues of honesty, integrity, credibility fell by the wayside. Guttenberg, who has written off about 70% of the dissertation and declared their own work should not be detained because he was apparently desperately needs. So seen, the case can still be the Gutenberg case Merkel.

The high degree of popularity among the population that enjoys Guttenberg still makes it clear that the theft of intellectual property is still considered a minor offense. Had to Guttenberg Substantive stolen (eg money) he would have been dismissed with immediate safety of the Chancellor and a large proportion of the population had had understanding. Now it is up to the judiciary, what happens next lies with the Baron.

So far I have had a positive opinion of this man that has all changed. For the credibility of the academic impostor who lied and cheated and of the principles of science obviously never knew is gone.

- Mr. Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, you resign from your minister! --- Peter Bröll

Additional note dated 23.02.2011, 17:35 clock:

I am not the only one who wonders about how it could happen that the thesis googled with "Summa cum laude "- was awarded by the University of Bayreuth - ie with the highest praise. This process raises an extremely bad light on the workings of this university. People who have studied in an honest way to the university, do now worry that the award is experiencing a significant devaluation.

Conclusion:
is often heard in the media and read: "Is there really nothing more important in Germany, as this gigantic campaign against a capable and highly popular Minister"
My comment: Yes, there is incomparably more important: soldiers who die in Afghanistan and the genocide in Libya, for example.

In the affair of Guttenberg, but it is only marginally a partisan hunt and it's certainly not for lack of quotation marks. And it's not serious "craft" error - as the Defense described it - but it is about whether a convicted con man can still continue to be ministrabel in light of the overwhelming evidence that he had misused the science consciously and deliberately to his advantage.

a completely different thing would be if he were caught up in the heat of battle about 1 or 2 text blocks without a source in his dissertation. In this case, one could discuss about sloppiness or a mistake. Who, however, has operated on 270 of 393 pages plagiarism, which holds the Chancellor and the public for fools if he continues to claim that this is not a deliberate deception, and thus not a plagiarism. --- Peter Bröll
